Pioneering Social Impact with Payal Nath
In our Empowerment Series, we spotlight trailblazing women shaping the world through their passion, determination, and impact. Today, we delve into the remarkable journey of Payal Nath, the founder of Kadam Haat, a social enterprise revolutionising the way we think about sustainability, artisanship, and community empowerment.
A Journey Rooted in Values
Payal Nath grew up as the daughter of an army officer, constantly moving across India. These formative years were marked by a strong sense of patriotism, adaptability, and a unique perspective on life. Her father instilled in her the value of being useful to society, urging her to contribute meaningfully to her nation and community. Her mother, a professional who transitioned into social work, demonstrated the power of adaptability and selflessness.
These values formed the bedrock of Payal’s identity. “Do not be a national waste,” her father would say, emphasising that every individual’s contribution mattered. Payal carried this lesson with her into adulthood and into the many facets of her career.
From Physics to Design to Impact
Payal’s academic journey was as diverse as her career. With a degree in Physics and a specialisation in shoe design, she explored the intersection of art and science. However, her career trajectory took an unexpected turn when she moved to Kolkata and found limited opportunities in her chosen field. Undeterred, Payal pivoted, drawing upon her creative instincts and technical skills to design exhibitions and work with the handicrafts sector.
This exposure to rural artisans sparked a realisation: there was a stark disparity between her earnings as a consultant and the income of the communities she worked with. This disparity ignited her mission to bridge the gap and provide artisans with the tools, opportunities, and recognition they deserved. Thus, Kadam Haat was born.
Kadam Haat: A Vision for Sustainability and Empowerment
Kadam Haat is more than just a brand; it’s a movement. The enterprise has created a sustainable ecosystem by utilising locally available materials to replace plastic and enabling artisans to showcase their skills. Payal’s products, such as handcrafted bags, have won over consumers with their vibrant designs and functionality.
Payal explains, “We aim to create a community where both men and women contribute equally to their families. The strength these women showcase is inspiring.” Despite facing resistance, including threats from local administrations and societal biases, Payal persevered. She recounts how a group of 24 women she worked with grew to 400, showcasing the collective power of resilience and community.
Challenges and Triumphs
Payal’s journey hasn’t been without challenges. Working in rural India often meant navigating gender biases and societal norms that restricted women from stepping out of traditional roles. Yet, Payal’s determination and the inherent strength of the communities she worked with proved transformative. “Sometimes challenges break you, but other times they make you,” she says, reflecting on her journey.
In her personal life, Payal acknowledges the internal biases women place on themselves. “We try to play superwomen, juggling everything. But I’ve learned to involve my family in my journey, making them a part of what I do.” Her daughter’s unwavering support has been a source of strength, often encouraging Payal to pursue her purpose-driven work.

Payal’s vision for Kadam Haat is ambitious. She aims to transform it into a global brand synonymous with conscious consumerism. “We want to make sustainable consumption affordable, accessible, and convenient,” she says. She dreams of retiring in a decade, travelling with her husband, and exploring biomimicry design—an innovative approach to finding sustainable solutions by mimicking nature.
