Where the Mountains Healed Me

Editor’s Note

In this moving travel memoir, the author takes us on a journey not just through Dharamshala’s tranquil landscapes but through a personal season of emotional rebirth. What began as a birthday surprise evolved into a powerful pilgrimage of healing—proving that sometimes, it’s the mountains, a true friend, and a bit of unexpected adventure that help us find our way back to ourselves.

As one of the best trips of my life, my journey to Dharamshala was a surprise that my best friend had meticulously planned. It was for my birthday and what we jokingly called my “Marriage Anniversary after the separation.” Her reasoning was classic: “Better to cry for the physical pain of trekking rather than emotional drama and pain.” And honestly, she was absolutely right. Tucked away in the majestic Himalayas, Dharamshala truly proved to be a gem, offering more than just breathtaking vistas. This charming hill station is a haven for those seeking healing, tranquillity, and spiritual growth, and my recent journey there was a testament to its transformative power.

Embraced by the Mountains

From the moment I stepped into the crisp mountain air, an instant sense of calm washed over me. The majestic Dhauladhar range, with its snow-capped peaks and lush forests, cradled me in its embrace. My friend, a kindred spirit, had indeed crafted an unforgettable escape, weaving together the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and spiritual exploration. There, in the majestic Himalayas’ embrace, a surprise awaited, crafted with love and grace. She knew just what I needed: a spark to proceed brightly in moments of darkness.

The Whisper of Triund and the Wisdom of Friendship

Our journey began with a trek to Triund’s crest, a challenging yet exhilarating ascent where the wind whispers secrets to the trees. Each step was a powerful reminder of the beauty of friendship and the joy of shared experiences. As we walked, the Tibetan flags fluttering in the breeze seemed to carry our prayers and hopes to the heavens, their vibrant colours a testament to resilience and faith. With trekking boots laced, we conquered Triund’s crest, each step reminding me that You bring out my best. Under Tibetan flags and the breeze’s gentle chant, my heart found its rhythm, dancing with ease and enchantment. The physical exertion was a welcome distraction, a tangible ache that replaced the unseen burdens I had been carrying. The panoramic views from the top, a sweeping vista of valleys and peaks, felt like a cleansing breath, clearing not just the lungs but the mind as well.

The Serene Kora Walk: A Balm for the Soul

One of the most profound experiences was the serene Kora walk around the Namgyal Monastery. This contemplative circumambulation is a central practice in Tibetan Buddhism, and as we joined pilgrims and monks, a profound sense of peace enveloped me. The air was gentle, filled with the soft, rhythmic chanting of mantras. The temple bells, ringing softly in the distance, created a symphony that was almost palpable, a constant, soothing hum that resonated deep within. Each turn of the prayer wheels, each step along the path, felt like an act of devotion, not just to a higher power but to myself and my own healing. The Kora walk, filled with hymns and gentle air, temple bells ringing softly, was a rare, precious moment to share. It was a space where introspection came naturally, where the gentle whispers of the wind seemed to carry ancient wisdom, inviting me to be present simply.

Flavours, Laughter, and Lasting Memories

As sunset painted the skies with hues of gold, we savoured the delicious Bhagsu cake. This local delicacy tasted warmth and shared happiness, cherishing memories that would stay with us forever. We often found ourselves sipping tea on a warm balcony, our laughter shining bright, a treasure to cherish. Dharamshala’s charm lies not just in its natural beauty but also in its rich cultural heritage. The narrow lanes of McLeod Ganj, lined with quaint cafes and shops, offered a glimpse into the town’s unique blend of Tibetan and Indian influences. From the delicious crepes and pancakes we devoured to the vibrant street art adorning the walls, every aspect of Dharamshala seemed to whisper stories of love, compassion, and resilience. Walking McLeod Ganj’s lanes, everything felt just right: a journey from chaotic streets to peaceful retreats. With you, dear friend, my heart found its sweet retreats.

The Healing Vibrations of Prayer

One of the most unforgettable experiences, and perhaps the most deeply impactful, was spinning the prayer wheels. As we whispered prayers and hopes, the sound healing vibrations filled our souls. The gentle hum of mantras, a symphony so fine, seemed to heal our hearts and soothe our minds. This wasn’t just a spiritual act; it was a deeply meditative one, where the repetitive motion and the resonant sounds created a space for profound internal calm. It felt like shedding layers of old pain, allowing new, positive energy to flow in.

Dharamshala is more than just a travel destination – it’s a journey of self-discovery, healing, and spiritual growth. As I reflect on my time in this enchanting town, I’m reminded of the transformative power of nature, friendship, and love. Thank you for crafting this unforgettable escape, dear friend. A grateful heart remembers the sacred space of love and friendship. You truly were my balm, and in simple pleasures, my spirit found calm.
